Message from the Chief Diversity Officer

Dear members of our community,

Yesterday, a small group of demonstrators came to our campus to spread disparaging and hateful messages targeting many groups and individuals, including women, the LGBTQ community, and people of different faiths. They were met with UMD counter protestors who celebrated love, while standing in solidarity with women, our LGBTQ friends and neighbors, and people of all faiths. UMPD was on scene throughout to protect participants' safety and constitutional rights.

This peaceful counter protest was student-led, and it sent a strong message. We salute you. Others chose to ignore the demonstration - perhaps to give less exposure to messages of hate. No matter the approach, an encounter like this still takes an emotional toll. Please access campus resources. ODI and the Division of Student Affairs stand ready to help.

In Solidarity,

Georgina Dodge, Ph.D.
