Signs of Disability

The UMD English Department’s Language, Writing, and Rhetoric Speaker Series will be welcoming Dr. Stephanie L. Kerschbaum (University of Delaware) for a virtual talk titled “Signs of Disability.” In this talk, Dr. Kerschbaum considers how perceptual apparatuses are built, taking up dominant and disabled practices of attention that materialize disability through intra-actions as perceptual apparatuses entangle with the world’s materiality. Dis-attentions of all kinds shape everyday experiences of navigating spaces, times, and encounters, but individual and collective perceptions are not the only factors that influence how and what we notice. Signs of disability are always disclosing and playing an active role in the making of meaning. CART services will be provided.
