LGBTQ+ Equity Center Staff Promotion

Vice president Georgina Dodge sent the following message to campus partners on August 15:

I am pleased to announce that Shantala Thompson (she/they) has been promoted to associate director of the LGBTQ+ Equity Center.

As associate director, Shantala will continue to provide leadership and expertise while overseeing the Center’s programs, communications and operations. She will also work to identify and implement strategies to transform our campus climate and culture in support of LGBTQ+ people, and represent the Center and UMD in a variety of on- and off-campus projects, including serving on and leading committees. A particular focus will be on leadership development programming.

Shantala recently served as program manager at the LGBTQ+ Equity Center and has extensive experience working both in higher education and on behalf of LGBTQ+ communities. They have facilitated college-level courses and developed curricula and conferences centered on race, gender, sexuality and intersectionality. Before joining the University of Maryland community, she provided campus-wide diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania and SUNY Albany. They hold master’s degrees in Africana studies and in gender, women’s and sexuality studies from the State University of New York at Albany, and a B.A. in African American studies from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

I thank Shantala for their service to the LGBTQ+ Equity Center and to our UMD community. Please join me in congratulating Shantala and welcoming her to this new position.

Sincerely,

Dr. Georgina Dodge (she/her)

Vice President for Diversity & Inclusion
